This was the third 5K in my life. Sara Haskins the Olympic star is my neighbor, and her fit-as-a-fiddle family were all out for the race. I felt proud to place 3rd in the 60-99 year classification, given my training background and the excellent runners in this class. Temperature was 40f at the 8AM start, no wind, and an all-pavement out-and-back course with several long hills.

Chubb Trail along the low-water track from milepost 3 to milepost 5, with excursion along the river trail. Recon for the Double Chubb on Saturday. Verified that the Meramec is not over the trail and the river portion passable.

Put the VFF's on, grabbed a sack, and ran the glades in Jefferson County searching for Morels. Found 54 nice ones. All hill work, lots of brambles, solitude.

Ran the Tyson portion of the Chubb trail... up the Chubb, around the loop, down the Flint Quarry Trail. Finished up at twilight. Felt strong, endorphins way up. This loop is a HIIT with heart rate off/on 140bpm to 160bpm. 55 minute run.

A lesson in humility!

The Jefferson City Road Racer club 60+ age group is STRONG AS HELL! I pushed hard, gained 2:30 time, for a PR of 33:04. And I was at the back of the pack in this bracket.

I assumed there would be few runners, even fewer in my age bracket. And assumed, wrongly, that I would have a good chance of placing and getting some bling. There were few runners, but all in my bracket were FAST! No bling, just a big plate of crow. My track-star USMC nephew told me later, "Uncle Cam, that club is full of old guys that can outrun our high school track team!"

Still, it was a big achievement to drop 2:30 on my PR. I now know I have to push really hard to keep this ball rolling!

Cross-country hill work combined with last of season morel hunt. Morel site 1.5 miles from parking, along horse trails and deer runs. Horse trail damage was extensive and presented ankle/balance challenges. Sprinted/surged up numerous hills.

No mushrooms but good endorphins and a fine run at dusk.
